BRIEF BACKGROUND OF THROMDE EDUCATION, PHUENTSHOLING

Phuentsholing Thromde is the main gateway to Bhutan and as a result it has become the biggest commercial and industrial hub of the country. It is located at the south western foothills of the country bordering the Indian State of West Bengal. The town is located near the Amochu and Omchhu river banks. Phuentsholing Thromde has six demkhongs namely with population of 24,000 and area of 19.68 sq km. In line with the Local Government Act 2009, Phuentsholing Thromde is a self-governing municipality with an elected Mayor, Thromde Thuemis and a Thromde Council in place since January 2011. Until 2012, the 6 schools (4 Government and 2 Private) which fell under Phuentsholing Thromde were directly under the administrative control of Chukha Dzongkhag though all the basic facilities were provided by Phuentsholing Thromde.

Only in 2013, the administrative control over schools was placed under Phuentsholing Thromde. The Thromde, today, has 3 Higher Secondary Schools (1 Government and 2 Private), 2 Middle Secondary Schools, 1 Lower Secondary School, 1 NFE Centre, 4 Private ECCD Centers, 1 Teacher Resource Centre with about 231 teachers (M-103/F-128), 67supporting staff (M-27/F-40) including GSP, ESP, and 1 NFE Instructor, and 4690 students (B-2346/G-2344). Though Phuentsholing is one of the biggest Thromdes, still Thromde Education Sector is facing challenges of providing quality education to our children.

Currently, the net primary enrolment ratio (NPER) is 100% for boys and 100% for girls with overall NPER of 100% based on the NER survey conducted by the Thromde in 2017. In terms of system efficiency and quality, the Thromde has made significant progress. As per the internal efficiency report generated in 2017, our Thromde's promotion rate is 96.4%, repetition rate is 2.4%, retention rate is 2.4% and dropout rate is 0.8%. Therefore, Phuentsholing Thromde is confident of achieving universal primary education within the 12th Five Year Plan.
